The Institute was finally named "Saint Petersburg State Medical Academy" (SPSMA) in June 1994. SPSMA has Medical and Academic Departments and a Hospital. The main Peter the Great Hospital (2000 beds) was built in 1903 (city's 200th anniversary). This Hospital is an architectural and historical complex including 50 buildings surrounded by a beautiful park. The Academy is ranked as the leading medical center in hygiene and disease preventive education in Russia. The SPSMA trains specialists in clinical and preventive medicine for more than 30 specialties. The goal of the Academy is to enable students to apply their knowledge of the fundamentals in an independent consideration of the patient's condition, diagnostic options, and therapeutic interventions.
The Departments and all the students of the Academy are committed to the development of physicians who will contribute to improvement in patient care through medical research. Students of The Academy will participate in a range of research activities, from basic science to clinical research and preventive medicine analysis. Through participation in academic activities and individual tutoring students will develop knowledge and skills that will help them prepare for careers in basic and applied medical science.

The Academy is a leading methodical medical center in the field of medical preventive education in Russia. The SPSMA trains specialists of clinical and preventive medicine for more than 30 specialties including public health organizers and economists, medical psychologists, managers in nursing, laboratory analysts, ecologists.
The Academy has 56 departments. The teaching staff consists of 600 people, among them one is a corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences, one is an honored scientist, two are academics and four are corresponding members of the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences, three are state prize winners, one is an academic of the International Academy of Higher School Sciences, three are academics of the International Academy of Ecology and Safety to Life Sciences, one is a corresponding member of the Peter Academy of Arts and Sciences.
There are 80 professor-doctors of medical sciences and more than 400 assistant professors - candidates of sciences. More than 4 000 students study at the Academy, including 1000 foreign students from 50 countries among them 400 students are from India. More than 30 000 physicians have graduated from the Academy during the years of its existence, 20 000 specialists of preventive medicine are among them.
The academy is coordinating with similar institutions in Sweden, U.S.A., Germany, Finland, and France on various projects.
The academy is recognized by the W.H.O. ,Medical council of India and countries like U.S.A., France, and Sweden.
